Out of the Box

Someone, somewhere mentioned an Out of the Box challenge, which reminded me of one our local doll club, the Denver Doll Artisans did years ago. I thought I'd post my entry in to that challenge, since he's one of my favorite original dolls. I think I won "Best Interpretation of Theme" for him.
He was titled "Doesn't Follow Instructions" and was inspired by more than a few people I know. He's attempting to put himself together, and despite the clear instructions on the box, he just can't get it and is scratching his head in perplexity.
He's made of hand dyed cotton, quilting cotton fabric, beads and a recycled silk shirt.

Early works, all sold

This gold skirted doll was my first Dream Star doll, my first painted face doll, and my second art doll ever. I had made another doll as a gift but hadn't been thinking of it becoming a big deal so I didn't take any photos before sending her on her way. I thought that was fun, I'll make more - and the rest, as they say, is history.

Either Way Dolls - soft pillow dolls as children's toys from a gingerbread man style pattern. My daughter and I couldn't agree which side of two coordinating fabrics should be the face, so "either way" - buyer's choice. The felt vest is removable.

Decision Time on a Work in Progress

I've been working on a few new designs for the fall shows so I don't bore the attendees with the same ol' same ol'. One new idea was to to do another fantasy creature such as a unicorn or pegasus, but that idea devolved into just a horse to keep things a bit simpler. A horse this tiny is hard enough.
The pattern now designed, debugged, sewn and stuffed turned out well enough and I was pleased with the dyed job - never a predictable thing. Now comes the decision I've been putting off. How to do the main and tail? Shall I use beads again, like all my previous ornaments? Shall I use some mohair yarn or maybe dye up some mohair locks? Or should I go through my art yarn stash?
Oh heck, I'm too tired right now, I'll put it off until another day.
